Unnai Nambi
Dance 4
A combination of movements and expressions describing a story
Unnai Nambi is a Varnam, which is the central and most complicated composition in a Bharatanatyam Margam. It is a demanding piece testing not only the stamina of a dancer but the training, the skill, the imagination of a dancer to improvise and to successfully alternate between pure dance and abhinaya.
The particular Varnam Arya is dancing to, is dedicated to Devi - or the feminine power. The first paragraph starts with the dancer as the devotee describing Devi as a protector to those who seek her blessings. She is fierce in her destruction of evil while loving of her devotees.
She is the destroyer of the Mahisha, the evil asura. The fierce Goddess that she is, she wields bow and arrow, axe and spear in protection of her worshippers.
This is a composition by Balameera Chandra in Simhendramadyamam raga and set in Aadi talam.
