What is an Arangetram ?

Culmination of Years of Learning

Arangetram is a Tamil word, which means ascending (etram) the stage or 'arangam' by a dancer. This is a concert length solo recital to the public, where the dancer presents a full repertoire of dances (Margam), demonstrating her knowledge of the dance that balances "nritta" or rhythm and "nritya" or expressions. This is the first step in the transition from an amateur to a professional dancer.

A Classical Indian Dance

Bharatanatyam is an ancient form of classical dance from South India. It is known for its grace, rhythm and sculpturesque poses. It has its origins in Natya Sastra, a comprehensive guide to the intricacies of dance, drama and music, written by sage Bharata around 5th Century BCE.  It was a refined art form by the middle of the first millennium CE. The dance is unique in its use of geometric precision, rhythmic complexity and a language of gestures and is depicted on various temples in southern India. By combining the gestures and poses with music the dancer tells stories from Indian mythology and ultimately expresses the yearning of the soul for union with the eternal.
