Kanikanum Neram
Dance 5
In praise of Lord Krishna in Malayalam
This beautiful composition in Malayalam praises Lord Krishna and expresses the desire of the devotee to be blessed with the ability to see him as the first vision every morning. This song is traditionally played during Vishu, which is the new year celebration in Kerala and occurs in April.
In the first stanza, the dancer describes Krishna as a little boy adorned in brilliant gold jewelry. The dancer then expresses a wish to see the flute-playing little Krishna running around with his tinkling anklets. We then see Krishna as a naughty cowherd leading his little friends in a successful raid to steal butter from their mothers.
Krishna appears as a prankster teenager who steals clothes from gopis as they swim in the river Yamuna. Finally we see him as a protector of the people of Virindavan from the anger of Indra. This padam takes us on a journey of emotions.
The composition is a ragamalika (uses many ragas) and is set in Aadi talam.
