Idadu Padam

Dance 7

Praising Lord Shiva - the creator of Bharatanatyam

This dance is in praise of Lord Shiva, who is mostly known to represent the facet of destruction in the Universe that then enables creation. However, in this composition the dancer is praising him as the lord of dance and as the creator of Bharatanatyam.

Lord Shiva dwells in the high mountains of Himalayas, has a serpent around his neck, with fire in one hand and his drum in the other. He is covered in tiger skin and the moon is shining brightly in his locks. In this dance, the dancer is admiring as Lord Shiva lifts his left foot up in dance. With the crescent moon on his head shining brightly, Lord Nataraja continues to dance to the beat of the mridangam and mesmerizes everyone.

This dance has been composed in ragam Khamas and is set in Aadi talam.
